Adventures on lakesWhat can lakes offer?
Lakes can provide lovely opportunities for people to travel in canoes or kayaks and enjoy
the peace, scenery and wildlife at the same time.
The degree of enjoyment varies with location. For example, in the English Lake District,
Coniston Water is quieter than Lake Windermere because of the absence of power boats and
lower visitor density. Scotland in contrast has many more lochs, some of which are very
remote and isolated. Going further a-field, Scandinavia has tens of thousands of lakes,
most of which are deserted. Canada, home of the Canadian canoe has even more to offer.
Where the lakes meets the shore
One of the most interesting parts of a lake is where it meets the land- the shore. The
shore can be explored in many craft, including canoes, kayaks and sea kayaks- each one
having its advantages and disadvantages.
Exploring
Canoes, kayaks or sea kayaks can be used to intimately explore even the tiniest feature,
shallow water, reed beds, islands, and lots more. Wildlife can be observed with minimal
impact, and, if you are quiet enough, you may be accepted as part of the environment.
Where to start?
There are lots of centres that can offer an introduction to canoeing kayaking or sea
kayaking. If you want to try by yourself, be prepared for the weather and lake condition-
you will get interesting and demanding weather and wave conditions to build your skills
and competence.
Planning your adventure- Access
Take a little time to find out what access arrangements there are, plan ahead, they differ
from country to country. Care should always be taken to support access agreements, so that
all users of lakes can share in the enjoyment of them. Be polite, introduce yourselves and
you will often be pleasantly surprised.
Don't attempt too much, you are at the mercy of the weather and need to have lots of
inbuilt alternatives including sitting and waiting for conditions to improve.
