What can canals offer?
Canals can provide lovely opportunities for people to travel in canoes or kayaks and enjoy the peace, scenery and wildlife at the same time. Canals are generally well sheltered and are good for learning and teaching BCU 2 Star personal skills
Canals provide opportunities for exploring the countryside using mixed modes of transport.
It is quite easy to organise "Half and half" trips where one half is on water while the other may be on feet, bicycle or even horseback.
Planning your adventure- Access
To use a canal, you will require a license from British Waterways or an equivalent licensing authority. If you are a member of the British Canoe Union, a waterways license is included. However, it is important to read the bylaws and understand the navigation conventions- e.g. "Drive on the Right".
Take a little time to find out what access arrangements there are, and plan ahead. Care should always be taken to support access agreements, so that all users of canals can share in the enjoyment of them. Be polite, introduce yourselves to other users and you will often be pleasantly surprised.
Don't attempt too much, you are still at the mercy of the weather and need to have lots of inbuilt alternatives including sitting and waiting for conditions to improve.
